As vice president of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys from 1960-89, I had the opportunity to discover and work with a lot of young players from small schools as well as those from well-known football powerhouses as they developed into major contributors on the field. The one constant was that we had a development plan in place for each player. The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan will help you develop a plan for your child's success in life just as we did for the Dallas Cowboys. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares enough about a child to help him or her succeed in the greatest game of all—the game of life.

Growing up in a football family, Bruce Tollner learned a game plan for life from his father, Ted, a brilliant offensive mind with more than forty years of coaching experience. Bruce breaks down the Xs and Os for parents in his new book, The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan. As an agent and attorney, Tollner has associated himself with special players and people such as Ben Roethlisberger, Trent Edwards, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, and others who break down some of their positive experiences growing up. These stories will move you like a game-winning Roethlisberger touchdown drive.

My wife, Linda, and I started the Jack Del Rio Foundation to help improve the lives of children in northeast Florida. As we all know, today’s children are tomorrow’s parents, leaders, health-care providers, and so on. Soon, we will need them; right now, they need us. Investing in our children is an investment in our future. At the Foundation, we recognize the need to be a part of “something greater than self.” Our goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and to encourage others to get involved. The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan is a way to get involved and do “something greater than self.” Read this book and apply its principles. It is an investment that will pay huge dividends in the future.

I grew up around football. My dad, Tom Dimitroff, helped me learn the facets of the game. His hard-nosed old-school approach taught me how to listen and learn. The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan offers old-school results with fresh ideas to help you help children be successful in life.

I grew up in an athletic family with my parents and siblings playing sports. My parents came to my games and encouraged me all the way. My interest in football started when I was in the ninth grade with a visit from my little league baseball coach. At the time he was coaching football at my high school. He visited my family home to recruit me to play football and said he thought I could be really good at it. I told him I would give it a try, and today I am playing quarterback in the NFL. You never know how the little things you do for a child can pay off big for that child in the future. Read The C.H.I.LD. Game Plan, use it to help you develop a winning game plan for your child, and get ready for some pretty cool, and sometimes surprising, results.

As a head coach in the NFL, I interact every day with men who are champions. Sometimes it's hard to realize that these NFL players were once little boys. However, I know that each man is the man he is today because someone else—a parent, a grandparent, a coach, or a friend—took time to have a positive impact in his life. What child's life can you positively impact? This book can be your playbook to do just that.

As a retired USMCR colonel and career federal prosecutor, I’ve spent a lot of time in the courtroom prosecuting drug traffickers. Most recently in 2008, I served under General David H. Petraeus as the director of the Law and Order Task Force tasked with the responsibility of restoring the rule of law to Iraq. Both were daunting challenges, and both required a clear vision of the desired outcome if any semblance of success was to be achieved. Whether in war, in the courtroom, or on the football field, for success to be possible, having a plan is essential—if not imperative. A good plan in place doesn’t always guarantee success, but it makes it more likely to be achieved than without one. Hoping and wishing for a favorable outcome is not an acceptable course of action. The same is true in raising a child, especially today. Today’s children face challenges and influences unthinkable when we were kids. Constant vigilance and a well-devised plan are absolutely critical to give our children the best chance at success and being productive citizens. To help prepare your child for these challenges I strongly recommend The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan!

The potential for sports participation to have a positive impact on the development and character building of youth is tremendous. Coaches, parents, and guardians play a key role in how a child athlete will incorporate important lessons such as teamwork, honesty, emotional intelligence, and persistence into their lives. Because this is not an easy task, a guide such as The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan can serve as a valuable resource to parents and guardians in assisting them with how to best support their child's sports experience. I commend any efforts that are being made to provide early education for athletes to make better decisions and have a plan.

Playing in the Superdome has allowed us the luxury of not having to worry about the weather; that is, until hurricane Katrina. Within a short period of time we had to move our entire football operations out of New Orleans. Although that was not part of our overall plan, we had to make adjustments. Life offers many surprises—some good, some very challenging. The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan will serve as a guide to help your child be ready for the good and sometimes very challenging surprises of life.

I have been associated with sports almost all my life as a player, as a coach, and now with the NFL Network. Something I have noticed about successful people is that they lived according to a winning game plan. They had someone in their life who cared enough to help them develop that plan and stick to it in good times and bad. I was very fortunate to have great parents. I highly recommend The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan because it will help you be that person in a child's life.

As president of the Indianapolis Colts, I am involved in a lot of decisions involving people on and off the field. There is little margin for error in the selection process. We must have the right people at the right place at the right time. Whether I am involved in the decision to hire someone for the front office, hire a coach, or select a player for the team, I want someone who exhibits the principles taught in The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan. By reading and applying the principles in this book, you can give a child the opportunity to excel far beyond the limits that can be reached by natural talent alone.

As a quarterback, I have played on some championship teams—and I have experienced some painful losses. Regardless of the outcome of any one game, my dad has been there to cheer me on. Whether I throw a winning touchdown pass or an interception, I know my dad is there to say, "Good job, Son, I am proud of you!" My parents have had a major influence on the way I live life, as well as the way I play football. Because of their influence, and that of my coaches and others, I am blessed to be able to live out a childhood dream to play professional football. The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan can help you to help your child live out their childhood dreams. Read this book, and put together a winning game plan for your child.

Just as my dad passed on a wonderful set of values to me, I hope that the treasures found in The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan help pass something special on to your children.

Take it from a guy who started working for a bookstore at a very early age... this book is a WINNER! Memories are made every day with kids. Buy this book, read it, and make some memories with your child.

As a head coach in the NFL, I always want my team playing its best football in December—and beyond. In 2008, we became the first team in NFL history to make the play-offs after starting the season with a 4-8 record. It was never our goal to start the season with a 4-8 record; it was, however, our goal to be in the playoffs. In part, that turnaround can be contributed to things we were doing in August before the season started. The funny thing about life is that some things pay off quick, while some are slower. The same is true in the life of a child. I highly recommend The C.H.I.L.D. Game Plan because it will help you lay the foundation for your child to play his or her best through every season of the most important game of all—the game of life.
